Action for Brain Injury Week 2022: See the Hidden Me

Today marks the beginning of Action for Brain Injury Week; an annual campaign by the charity Headway – the brain injury association.

ABI Week is designed to raise awareness of the devastating effects of brain injury and, each year, Headway highlight a different theme. In 2020, the focus was on memory loss and last year was deemed “A life in lockdown” highlighting social isolation after a brain injury, worsened due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year, the ABI Week theme is “See the hidden me” focussing on what can be a hidden disability for many survivors of brain injury. The symptoms of brain injury can often be misunderstood and Headway aim to raise awareness of the challenges and frustrations survivors can face.

“See the hidden me” aims to empower survivors to talk about when their hidden disability has made life more challenging and to make the general public aware to understand what someone with a brain injury is experiencing.

Many brain injury survivors look as they did before their accident and so can face day-to-day struggles when the effects of the brain injury are misunderstood as rudeness or being drunken behaviour, for example.
